Makati Science High School Participates in the First Asean Youth Science Summit

Having the theme of “Power Up for the Future through Science and Technology,” the 2008 ASEAN Youth Science Summit (AYSS) gathered science-inclined delegates from 12 countries for the purpose of providing a venue for the next leaders to discuss some relevant scientific and global issues with the end view of promoting peaceful agreements among Southeast Asian nations. The AYSS was held last July 8-10, 2008 at the Traders Hotel in Manila. Accompanied by Ms Esperanza Retorbar Sabangan, Makati Science High School fourth year elective science teacher, Marian Denise Glipo Basallote and Zatia Denise Danao Gammad of IV- Madame Marie Curie were two of the Philippine delegates for this two-day event.

Organized by the Department of Science and Technology, the AYSS is a complementary activity of the ASEAN Science and Technology Week Celebration. The summit oriented the delegates, along with their teachers, on the parliamentary ways of handling problems that affect nations on a regional and global scale. It focused on specific issues that apply to the youth’s experiences and inclinations.

On the other hand, there was a parallel session held for the teachers concerning them the best practices in using information technology in teaching science and mathematics to students and the effects of computer games on learning or behavior of students

Makati Science offers Nihonggo Lessons

Today, Japanese is already being taught not only in universities around the globe but also in numbers of primary and secondary schools worldwide. International interest in the Japanese language dates from the 1800s but has become more widespread following Japan's economic bubble of the 1980s

Because Makati Science High School is soaring for greater heights to fulfill its vision of having global educational linkages, this school year, it is now offering a free Nihonggo classes consisting of 30 students and 5 teachers.

Many of its students have been eager to be included in this program. Indeed, this idea brought much zeal and excitement not only to the students but also to the faculty members as the school year opened last June 10.

Those who will be chosen shall be asked to sign a memorandum of agreement as one of the requirements of the program. Through this agreement, the willingness to attend will be seen and how determined they are to learn will be tested.
The said program will be done every Wednesday from 5:20 pm to 6:20 pm. This will help students be globally competitive when it comes to the use of the Japanese language and be effective communicators of Nihonggo.

Congratulations to the lucky participants and may you enjoy studying the Japanese language. “Guddoraku daremo!”

Makati Science Admits More Students

The Makati Science High School, having its entrance exam annually every March, admitted a greater number of students this school year than the past years.

This school year, school year 2008–2009, it had planned to admit 200 students hence approximately 180 slots were just filled up.

Because of the high population of incoming freshmen, the number of sections of different year levels now became five, greater than the usual four sections per year level.

The added sections were I–Aristotle for the first year, II–Anton Van Leeuwenhoek for the second year, II–Neils Bohr for the third year and IV–Madamme Marie Curie for the fourth year.

The only known main cause of the administration for doing this is due to the fact that the school will evacuate and will have its new territory not later next year.

 Makati Science Adopts New Curriculum

After more than two decades of existence, the Makati Science High School then changed learning from science-oriented to science and engineering-oriented curriculum.

With the new system, the curriculum was changed by the emission and addition of some subjects, especially the electives; and since a new curriculum was adopted, some of the units for getting the students’ average were also changed for some subjects spend more hours compared to the past years.

In the first year, only the elementary statistics remained as a compulsory subject from all the electives; however, the students were given the choice if they would want to take up either Developmental Reading through Interest-Based Literature or Advanced Statistics.

For the second year, they were given the choice of taking either Business Mathematics or Advanced Literature.

For the third year, Analytic Geometry under Mrs Guadaliza Villamor and Creative Writing under Mr Joselito Bisenio were also decided as electives.

Similar changes were also made in the Fourth Year, Journalism and Print Media under Mr Alixander Haban Escote and Linear Algebra under Mrs Guadaliza Villamor were taken by the students as electives.

BY LEA SALEN PERALTA and PRECIOUS LUISA AQUINO ENRILE

CHOSEN BY THE International Education and Resource Network (iEARN) Executive Council, Mrs Ma Luisa Hernandez-Larcena, Makati Science High School English Department officer in charge, represented the Philippines in the First iEARN- Asia Pacific Conference in Tokyo, Japan, from July 31 to Aug. 4.

Together with 100 Japanese teachers and students and 15 country delegates from Iran, China, Korea, Nepal, Taiwan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Australia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, Mrs Larcena attended the conference with the theme "How to Initiate Collaborative Interactive Learning in iEARN-Asia."

"During the first day of the conference, the delegates discussed their role, their involvement, and their existing projects in iEARN. I took this chance to talk about the Makati Science High School and its participation in various iEARN telecollaborative projects since 2001," Mrs Larcena said in an interview with The Makati Science Vision.

"I also informed the other delegates about 'A Vision: An Anthology of Creative Writings' that I have been facilitating since 2005. I received a lot of commendations on the hard work put into it by the Philippine team and on the creative writing skills of Makati Science students," Mrs Larcena added.

According to Mrs Larcena, the other projects launched during the conference included the Teddy Bear Exchange Project, the Teddy Bear Project Workshop, and the Video Conference Workshop, which provided real time demonstration in connecting two iEARN countries and the Learning Circles where Asian students will discuss online various issues and concerns, and in the process, will help solve problems for a better world.

"The highlight of the conference was the 'Birth of iEARN-Asia Education Network' that aims to provide Asian children with a place for secure dialogue, a place to improve conversation skills, and most importantly, a place to learn globally. Indeed, it was a meaningful experience for me since I am the newest member of the iEARN family among the country delegates," Mrs Larcena explained.

As the iEARN-Philippines coordinator, Mrs Larcena manages iEARN registered users in the country.
