OCTOBER IS WORLD TEACHERS' MONTH
- RYLL REGINE PUNIO SANTOS

"We are like children, who stand in need of masters to enlighten us and direct us; and God has provided for this, by appointing his angels to be our teachers and guides."

After a week of vacation, the students once again come back to their old ways and go back to school. In cooperation with the celebration of World Teachers’ Month, students thought of ways on how to thank their teachers for their hard work and sacrifices they give in order to provide the students the necessary knowledge and values they must acquire and might need in the future.

In 1993, UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) inaugurated October 5 as World Teachers’ Day, a day to celebrate teachers and the central role they play in guiding children, youths & adults through the life-long learning process.

The students each wrote a prayer dedicated to all the teachers in Makati Science. At exactly 10 o’clock in the morning, October 5, everyone stopped for a minute from their respective classes and read a prayer for all the teachers in Makati Science.

In this small gesture, the students not only showed their love for their teacher but they showed that they are proud of what each teacher has done in their lives. In little ways, the students were able to reach out to their teachers and tell them “I love you” even though they did not say it aloud for everyone to hear.

Teachers help us in big ways. They not only teach us primary education and common knowledge. They also teach us how to be human. Real education should educate us out of self into something far finer; into a selflessness which links us with all humanity. The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think--rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men. Education must provide the opportunities for self-fulfillment; it can at best provide a rich and challenging environment for the individual to explore, in his own way.
