INNER WHEEL CLUB OF THE PHILIPPINES SCHOLARSHIP
CONTEST BAGGED BY A SENIOR OF
MAKATI SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

- RYLL REGINE PUNIO SANTOS

Beverly Quipe Brandes of IV – Isaac Newton got a step closer to grasping the scholarship grant funded by the Inner Wheel Club of the Philippines.

Last August, students of different year-levels in Makati Science competed for the much-aimed for scholarship. They had to go through a rigorous competition with each other to get on top.  Their first task was to write an essay with the main topic about global warming. They were asked with the question “If you were a superhero, how would you help people to stop global warming?”

After the bloody battle of words, they had to go into another round which was extemporaneous speaking.

Each participant was asked about their own stand about some of the most talked about issues of today. They were each given two minutes for every topic they were asked about. Each contestant was asked three questions and so was Ms Brandes. Ms Brandes was asked three questions namely; 1) Is Corazon Aquino deserving to be called a national hero? 2) Is it right to include Carlo J. Caparas in the list of awardees of national artists? And lastly, do you agree about the issue of ConAss?

After the extemporaneous speaking competition, the winners were announced, at last. Maria Ericka Tan Duran of IV – Enrico Fermi bagged the third place. She received a certificate together with Php 1000 in cash. On the other hand, Marydelle Mayondia Gomez of IV –Michael Faraday got the second place in which she received Php 2000 in cash along with a certificate also. And the winner of the contest was none other than Beverly Quipe Brandes of IV – Isaac Newton. She received a certificate and a worthy sum of Php 3000 in cash.

She will be moving on to the NCR-level of the competition where she will face off with different schools all over the National Capital Region. The competition will be held on November 14.

In preparation for the said competition, Ms Brandes is being trained by Mrs Teresita E Barro, a Filipino III teacher in Maksci.

“Masaya ang feeling ko lalo pa at malapit na ko sa pinakataas. Maabot ko na ang scholarship, konti na lang. Nagpapasalamat ako kay God, sa family ko atsaka sa friends ko sa patuloy na pagsuporta nila sa akin. Isang malaking karangalan sa akin na i-represent ang school ko at malaking tulong na rin sa akin kapag nakuha ko ang scholarship dahil kailangan ko siya sa college,” Ms Brandes quoted when I had a chance to sit down and talk to her.
