Do you know what your blood type is?
In accordance with one of the projects of the Makati Science High School Senior Red Cross Youth Council (MSHSSCYC), a campus-wide blood typing was held at the grounds of Makati Science High School last March 15. Three representatives from the Philippine National Red Cross- Rizal Chapter went to Makati Science to conduct the said event.
A blood type (also called a blood group) is a classification of blood based on the presence or absence of inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs). There are four kinds of blood types namely type A, type B, type AB and type O. Type AB being known as the universal receiver and type O being known as the universal donor.
The students, especially the ones who did not know what their blood type was were encouraged to take the blood type test. At first, some of them were reluctant as to how they saw the way the representatives know the blood type. The representatives first clean the middle finger of the patient with alcohol. Then, they get blood by pricking the finger of the patient and putting it in a slide. To know what their blood type is, they test the ph level of the blood.
The first batch to take the test was a bit scared at first because some of them said that the needle or the way the representatives pricked their hand was hurtful. But after a while, fear did not become a hindrance for them to know what their blood type was.
All in all, the project was a success. Keep up the good work, MSHSSRCYC!
